South End

Community Information

The South End, despite what the name suggests, is not actually south of downtown Boston, but rather south of South Endthe Back Bay. Formerly one of the less savory areas of Boston, the South End serves as an example of how a neighborhood can turn itself around to become one of the most pleasant areas of a city.

HISTORY

The South End was originally swampy tidal marshland much like the Back Bay. The small Boston neighborhood developed in the middle of the 19th century as part of a land fill program designed to expand the city westward. The end of that century and the first half of the 20th century saw the South End Boston area develop rapidly into tenement housing for new immigrant and African-American communities, the latter of which led to the South End becoming the jazz capital of Boston City thanks to a multitude of above-average clubs. Over the decades, however, the South End Boston Real Estate district became one of the poorest in the city thanks to the rise of absentee landlordism.

Thankfully, this was not the end of the story for the South End of Boston. A combination of successful community programs and an influx of wealthier residents helped the South End Boston neighborhood escape its fate. Currently the South End of Boston stands as a picture of diversity in many ways.

ARCHITECTURE

The most common architectural feature of the South end is the presence of bowfronts from the Victorian era. Consisting of blocks of uniform five-story buildings in a single style, bowfronts are used for both commercial and residential purposes. Though the style used may vary, many of the buildings keep the same general visual trend of red brick and gray slate.
